The name Bursa came from the name of its founder (Prusias), King of Bithynia. Sultan Orhan Ghazi opened it in 1326 AD, to be the first capital of the Ottoman Empire.

Bursa was home to many civilizations such as Rome and Byzantium. Moreover, the Seljuks occupied it and continued until it fell into the hands of the Ottomans in the fourteenth century.

  • Bursa the Cultural Capital of Turkey 2022.. Bursa was chosen as the cultural capital of the Turkic world 2022:

The International Organization of Turkic Culture, also known as TURKSOY, was established in

1993. The organization maintains a mission of bringing together the Turkic peoples and preserving

their common culture.

The Permanent Council of TURKSOY gathered on September 16th, 2021 for the 38th Term Meeting

which took place in Uzbekistan’s Khiva, the 2020 Cultural Capital of the Turkic World. The term

meeting took place after one year delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The meeting was attended by Uzbek Minister of Culture, Minister of Culture and Tourism of the

Republic of Turkey, Bursa Mayor, as well as Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign

Trade, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Uzbekistan, Minister of Culture of Azerbaijan, Minister

of Culture, Information, Sports and Youth of Kyrgyzstan, Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports of

Kazakhstan. Moreover, the online meeting was attended by the Deputy Minister of Culture of

Turkmenistan, Head of the Office of Culture and Tourism Management of the Gagauz Autonomous

Republic, and Minister of National Education and Culture of the TRNC.

At the meeting, the Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey Mehmet Nuri Ersoy

suggested Bursa as the Cultural Capital of the Turkic World 2022. Moreover, he said: “It is a great

pleasure for me to declare that Bursa has applied for this title for the year 2022. As such, Bursa is a

city which used to be the capital of the Ottoman Empire and enchants everyone with its historical

heritage and architecture as well as its beautiful nature.

At the meeting, participants approved the proposal and decided that Bursa be

declared as Cultural Capital of the Turkic World 2022.

Therefore, upon the decision of the Permanent Council of Ministers of Culture of TURKSOY at its

38th term meeting the city of Bursa has been declared Cultural Capital of the Turkic World 2022.

Furthermore, in the meeting, Bursa Mayor Mr. Alinur Aktaş made a presentation on Bursa.

Mayor Aktaş said that Bursa was once the capital of the Ottoman Empire and is the fourth biggest

city of Turkey in demographic terms and third biggest city of the country in terms of exportation.

Mayor Aktaş further added that Bursa is also home to shrines of many Ottoman sultans and

stressed that it therefore features many architectural works made upon their order.

Mayor Aktas who added that with its 23 museums, Bursa is one of the rarest places in the world

where one can contemplate exquisite examples of Turkic culture which enchant every visitor and

attract tourists throughout the year.

Mayor Aktaş further said that Bursa takes its visitors onto a journey through history with its 33

ancient caravanserais and typical Turkish architecture and that it is, at the same time, a city where

green meets blue with social complexes of the Ottoman period.
